Malay party to accumulate Ringgit 10 million to set up Tamil schools

Nilai (Malaysia), June 11 : The People's Progressive Party is expected to accumulate at least 10 million Ringgit before the end of the year out of the targeted fund of 100 million Ringgit to set up Tamil schools.

The Tamil Schools Development Fund will be given to 523 Tamil schools throughout the country, including 370 partially aided schools.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's department T. Murugiah, who is also PPP National Youth Chief, has declared a meeting on June 29 at the Putra World Trade Centre to get feedback from those who support the cause.

"Government allocations may be the same for schools in urban and rural areas but the conditions in which rural schools are operating are inadequate," he said.

"Our aim is to channel aid to Tamil schools which are in poor condition and lack amenities. The fund will also be used for extra classes during examinations," the NST Online quoted Murugiah, as saying.

He informed that the working paper for the fund had been submitted to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein last week.

"This fund will not burden the government as donations will be collected from the public. I urge the Indian community, Tamil schools' parent-teacher associations and corporate figures to contribute," Murugiah declared.
