JD-S asks for CBI probe into police firing in Haveri

Bangalore, Jun 11: Strongly condemning yesterday's police firing in which one farmer was killed and several others were injured in Haveri district, Janata Dal (S) leader and former Minister H D Revanna today demanded a CBI inquiry into the firing. Addressing newspersons here, Mr Revanna alleged that due to ''improper'' handling of the fertiliser issue by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, an innocent farmer lost his life.

"The BJP Government in Karnataka has failed to visualise the extent of the problem faced by the farmers in the state despite the JD(S) raising the issue of fertiliser shortage during the confidence motion, moved by Mr Yeddyurappa in the Assembly,'' he alleged. Referring to the firing incident, Mr Revanna demanded the state government to make public the truth whether prior permission was obtained before opening firing on the agitating farmers, since there were conflicting statements in this regard. He also criticised Mr Yeddyurappa for allegedly calling farmers ''anti-social elements,'' in whose name he had taken oath as Chief Minister of the State.
