Attack on national camper, police registers case against cop

Patiala, June 11 (UNI) Patiala police has registered a case against Pritpal Singh, an Assistant sub inspector (ASI) with the Punjab Police for his alleged involvement in a midnight clash in the National Institute of Sports (NIS) on Monday last which left a top Indian athlete, preparing for the Beijing Olympics, seriously injured.

Inspector General (IG) of Patiala Zone, C S R Reddy said here today that the police has been told to investigate the matter. He assured that no one will be spared.

Following the intervention of the IG the Civil Lines police station has registered a case against Pritpal Singh under sections 323, 452 and 506 of Indian Panel Code. NIS executive director L S Ranawat had lodged a complaint with the police after the clash.

Shot putter Om Parkash Singh, who won a silver medal in the Asian indoor championship held at Doha recently, sustained serious head injuries after he entered into an altercation with triple jumper Pritpal Singh in his room at Dhyan Chand Hostel at the NIS campus on June nine.

Pritpal Singh, who is not in the national athletics camp underway at the NIS, was allegedly staying in the hostel for the past few days without permission from the authorities. He was thrown out of a national camp earlier on disciplinary ground. The triple jumper is said to be close to bigwigs in the Athletic Federation of India (AFI).
