6000 athletes to participate in National Youth Games
Bangalore, June 11 (UNI) More than 6000 athletes in the under 18 age group from all parts of the country would participate in the first National Youth Games to be held here from July 22 to 29, Karnataka Minister for Sports and Youth Services Gulihatti Shekar said today.
Talking to newsmen here, he said that the events would be held in 24 disciplines and the winners can stake claim to participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune September and Youth Olympics to be held in Singapore during 2010.
Various Committee have been formed to create facilities to organise each event and Secretaries of different departments are heading panels.
Games High Power Committee Member Secretary Amar Kumar Panday said that new synthetic tracks would be provided for field events.
The disciplines in which competitions would be held were Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing (boys), cycling, Equestrian, Football, Fencing, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, tennis, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling (boys).
Karnataka Olympic Association President K Govindraj said that it was also proposed to hold a 5 km cycle race event on the Ring Road during the Games.
