Onassis heiress to sell off her mother's pricey jewels

New York, June 10 : Athina Roussel, the daughter of Christina Onassis and the only living descendant of her grandfather Aristotle Onassis, the Greek shipping magnate, is selling millions of pounds of jewellery she inherited.

When Athina was only 10 years old, she declared she would give her fortune away, reports the New York Daily News.

The 23-year-old, who inherited a fortune estimated at 2 billion dollars, has put her mother's jewelry collection, valued at approximately 16 million dollars, up for auction at Christie's in London.

Christina died 20 years ago when Athina was only three and she used to wear the pieces constantly.

However, Athina reportedly sees them as irrelevant to her own lifestyle.

Among the items on display are a 38-carat diamond, expected to fetch 4.4 million dollars, and a rare Buddha by Carl Faberge, jewelry-maker to the last Russian czar, whose value is estimated at 500,000 dollars to 700,000 dollars.
