TDP women's wing agitates against liquor shops

Tirupati, June 9 (UNI) As many as 100 women activists of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today staged a dharna in front of the excise office here in protest against the 'belt shops' in the state.

The agitators, led by TDP State Mahila President and actress Roja, urged the Government to cancel the license of all liquor shops in the state and remove all shops located near schools and temples.

She alleged that the Congress government in the state was planning to issue 15 per cent more licenses to run liquor shops for earning state revenue up to Rs 800 crore.

Later, she submitted a memorandum to Excise Superintendent incharge Prasad at Byragipatteda.

Earlier, the agitators raided a belt shop and damaged liquor bottles at Jeevakona, near here, triggering tension. But, timely police intervention brought the situation under control. However, no one was arrested.

Roja said the agitation would continue in a phased manner in all districts.
