Congress petitions NHRC against Kerala police

New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) The Congress today approached the National Human Rights Commission, alleging ''brutal, vicious and unprovoked'' attack by Kerala Police on Youth Congress activists who were demanding a cut in sales tax on petroleum products.

The petition was filed before the NHRC by AICC Secretary Tom Vadakkan who alleged violation of human rights when the police personnel handled the agitation by the Youth Congress workers in Thrissur, Kollam and other district headquarters on June seven.

AICC Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told mediapersons that the police had unleashed an attack on Youth Congress activists who were protesting peacefully. Police used electronic batons and lathis against the workers.

She said the volunteers were also meted out inhuman treatment.

Those who were injured were not provided even proper medical treatment.

''The Policemen were not only offenders, but also compounded the offence by refusing essential medical attention,'' Ms Natarajan said, adding that ''The Congress strongly condemns the reign of terror unleashed on Youth Congressmen in Kerala.'' UNI SH RR BD2035
