Police fire in air to disperse DMK, AIADMK groups

Puducherry, Jun 8 (UNI) Police fired two rounds in the air to disperse DMK and AIADMK groups who clashed at Nellithope here tonight.

Police said the two groups often clashed in the constituency where all the councillors belonged to the DMK and the MLA was from the AIADMK.

It was alleged a shop owned by DMK Councillor Velavan was ransacked by AIADMK MLA Om Sakthi Sekar's supporters.

Hearing the news, DMK Youth Wing Leader and MLA R Shiva and his supporters reached the spot where Mr Sekar and his partymen were waiting.

Soon there was a verbal duel following which Mr Sekar allegedly assaulted two DMK councillors in the presence of Mr Shiva leading to the clash.

Police rushed to the spot and had to fire in the air to bring the situation under control.

Heavy police pickets have been posted in the area which had been gripped by tension.
