NUJ (I) condemns attack on Loksatta editor's house

New Delhi, Jun 6 (UNI) The National Union of Journalists (India) and Delhi Journalists Association today condemned the cowardly attack on the residence of Kumar Ketkar, editor of the Marathi language daily 'Loksatta,' by activists of the Shiv Sangram political group in Thane, Maharashtra a couple of days ago.

NUJ(I) president P K Roy said today in a statement that the attack was reportedly in retaliation for an editorial written by Ketkar, which was sharply critical of a decision by the government in Maharashtra to install a giant 309-feet statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji near Mumbai coastline.

The editorial had reportedly described the state government's decision as a cheap way of gaining political mileage. Ketkar and his wife, who were at home during the attack, were unharmed, though property has extensively damaged.

The NUJ(I) urged the authorities in Mumbai and Thane to bring charges and impose stiff penalties against the five persons who had been detained and others involved in the attack.
