Guwahati, Jun 06 (UNI) The number of adjutant stork, one of the most endangered birds of this part of the region, has been reducing at an alarming speed.

The storks, which has a good concentration at Guwahati, Nagaon and Tinsukia town, are going down dramatically over the years.

According to a survey carried out by early birds, an NGO working in this field, the present population of the species at Guwahati city is 118, which was 288 in 2002. According to them over 50 per cent of the birds perished over a period of just six years.

Expressing serious concern over the reducing numbers, early birds general secretary Moloy Baruah attributed it to lack of food and open space for them.

''At this rate the bird may become completely extinct in just over a decade,'' he cautioned.
