Steps being taken to end NLC strike: TN Govt

Cuddalore, Jun 5 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy today said steps were being taken to end the strike by contract workers in Neyveli Lignite Corporation(NLC) soon.

Talking to newspersons, the senior minister, who was here to oversee the preparations for the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's women's wing conference on June 14 and 15, said after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi urged Union Communications Minister A Raja and CPI leader D Raja to take up the matter with the Centre, the two would meet Union Minister of State for Coal Santosh Bagrodia in New Delhi. ''If necessary, Mr Bagrodia would be brought to NLC to carry out the talks with contractual workers' representatives'', he added.

A solution would be worked out in one or two days and the demands of NLC's contract workers would be looked into, he said and added ''I expect the workers to return to work in the next two days''.

The demands of the NLC contract workers include, among others, regularisation, bonus and medical facilities.

Meanwhile , answering questions on the power situation in the state, Mr Veerasamy said this was a nationwide issue.

He said the DMK party's first women's wing conference would see Mr M Karunanidhi announcing several welfare measures for women on the concluding day.

Lakhs of women cadres would be participating in the conference, he added.
