Five held in police encounter; sub-inspector injured

Lucknow, June 5 (UNI) Police today arrested five notorious criminals after an encounter in which a sub-inspector got grievously wounded in Mandwar station area in Bijnore district of Uttar Pradesh.

On a tip-off, police reached Wazidpur village, where a few criminals were stealing telephone tower battery and other materials.

Police issued warning and asked the criminals to surrender, but giving deaf ear to them, the miscreants fired upon the police.

In retaliation, police also fired back and held five criminals, however, other five managed to escape.

A police sub-inspector received bullet injuries on his chest in the encounter and was sin a critical condition.

A car, two country-made pistols, two knives and a few tools were seized from them.
