Five tribals killed, four injured by speeding jeep

Sonepat, Jun 4 (UNI) A speeding jeep mowed down five tribals including a father and his son and a mother and daughter and injured four others adjacent to G.T Road in Kundli area around last night.

The victims, belonging to Bagri Lohar caste, a roaming tribe, were sleeping on the road-side when the driver of a speeding jeep coming from Delhi-side reportedly lost control and ran over them.

The driver abandoned the jeep and escaped.

While Phoolo and her daughter Sharmila, Sher Singh and his son Tej Pal and a woman Mausham died on the spot, Phoolo's husband Sohan, Om Pal and his wife and a girl Sakina were injured.

On receiving information, Kundli and Highway police reached the spot and brought the injured and four bodies in local Civil hospital.

The body of 12-year-old girl Sharmila was found lying in a ditch near the accident site in the morning today.

The police have seized the jeep and a case has been registered at Kundli police station against the unidentified driver of the jeep.

The Deputy Commissioner, Ajit Balaji Joshi and SP Navdeed Singh Virk also reached in the hospital.

The DC has announced Rs 50,000 each to the families of the deceased and Rs 10,000 each to injured from the District Red Cross society.

The DC also assured families that the administration would also process the cases of deceased under Rajiv Gandhi Bema Yojna for ex-Gratia payment .
