New Delhi, June 2 (UNI) Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) today said it has commissioned the country's largest blast furnace at Tata Steel Ltd in Jamshedpur.

The 3,814 cum blast furnace has a capacity to produce 2.5 million tonnes hot metal per annum, the company said in a statement, adding that the project was completed in a period of 25 months.

The contract had been awarded to L&T and Italy-based Paul Wurth for design, manufacture and commissioning of the furnace with axillary facilities on a turnkey basis.

The L&T-Paul Wurth consortium is currently executing two more 2.5 MTPA blast furnaces on a turnkey basis at Visakhapatnam steel plant and Bhusan Steel Plant, which are scheduled for commissioning in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
