India's export up 31pc in April

New Delhi, Jun 2: The country's export went up by 31.5 per cent in April to 14.40 billion dollars (Rs 57,633 crore) as compared to 10.95 billion dollars (Rs 46,164 crore) recorded during the corresponding month of last year, government data released today said.

However, during the comparable months, the country's import also increased by 36.6 per cent to 24.28 billion dollars (Rs 97,151 crore) from 17.77 billion dollars (Rs 74,895 crore), the data by Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) added. Oil imports at 8.02 billion dollars, up 46.2 per cent from 5.49 billion dollars , and non-oil imports at 1.624 billion dollars, an increase of 32.3 per cent on 12.27 billion dollars in April 2007, led to higher imports.

The country's trade deficit in April this year was estimated at 9.87 billion dollars, up from the 6.81 billion dollars deficit recorded in April 2007, the data said.
