Handloom weavers' plea to govt
Tiruchirapalli, Jun 2 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weaving Workers' Federation urged the Centre and the state government to take steps to check the hike in the prices of raw materials, especially yarn and silk yarn.
A resolution adopted at the state general body meeting of the federation held here yesterday said the hike in the prices of raw materials hit the handloom weaving industry to a large extent and a number of weavers were without jobs due to closure of units.
Thanking the state government for providing ten per cent hike in wages to handloom weavers employed in cooperative societies, the meeting wanted yearly increment in wages instead of raising them once every ten years.
They also requested the state government to increase monthly pension of handloom weavers of cooperative societies from Rs 400 to Rs 1,000.
The government should allot adequate funds to the Weavers Welfare Board to enable it extend education, marriage, delivery assistance, without delay, to its members.
The Centre and the state government should provide housing facilty to all cooperative society members and weavers in the private sector, they said.
