12 kg heroin seized, two arrested

Amritsar, Jun 2 (UNI) Police today seized 12 kg heroin bound for Chandigarh and arrested two persons in the border village of Manjh in Amritsar (Rural).

SSP Iqbal Singh said the two, identified as Ranjit Singh of border village of Mahawa and Shamsher Singh of village Bharopal, were nabbed on a tip-off while they were on way to deliver the contraband to a person in Chandigarh.

The SSP said that the interrogation of the two had revealed that the contraband, worth Rs 60 crore in the international market, was to be delivered to an unidentified man in a car with a sticker displaying number 307.

The packets of one kg each were packed in two bags. They would have earned Rs 50,000 per packet for delivering the narcotics which came from across the border.

The villages to which the arrested persons belonged were notorious for drug peddling and Shamsher's father Dilbagh Singh was also lodged in Amritsar jail under similar charges, the SSP said.

Police have registered a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Act (NDPS) Act at Police Station Lopoke, he said.
