TN to procure wheat directly from Punjab
Chennai, May 28 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to procure 10,000 tonnes of wheat directly from the Punjab Civil Supplies Corporation every month for a special scheme in the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the State.
Food Minister E V Velu, in a statement here today, said the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation would procure the wheat from Delhi and make it available under the special scheme, launched by the Government in March to check rise in prices of essential commodities.
The wheat would be ground in mills in the State and supplied as fortified atta and rava under the special scheme, he said.
The State Government had to directly procure wheat on the orders of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi as the Centre had stopped the special allocation of wheat. The State Government had launched the special scheme, distributing essential food items like toor dal, urad dal, palm oil and fortified atta at reduced prices to curb the spiralling prices of essentials.
