Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam released after one-year detention

Srinagar, May 28 (UNI) Senior Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) leader and Chief of Muslim League Masarat Alam was today released by a local court after he served more than one-year detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Additional District Magistrate, Srinagar, today granted bail to Masarat and ordered his release.

Later, he was released on the court premises.

On May 26, Jammu and Kashmir high court had directed the authorities to release Masarat if he was not sought in any other case.

He was arrested on April 27 last year after he and other leaders of different Hurriyat constituents participated in a public meeting addressed by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Masarat was later booked under PSA 13 of the PSA for a period of one year which was quashed by the court in September last year.

However, he was again booked under the PSA.

The Hurriyat leader later challenged his detention in the court.
