Agitating villagers arrested

Puducherry, May 26 (UNI) About 100 residents of Thattanchavady village in Villianur commune, near here, were arrested when they picketed the Commune Panchayat Commissioner, today.

Police said the village was facing acute water shortage for several years. Though borewell was sunk in the area, pipes were not fixed allegedly due to financial crunch.

The villagers had announced an agitation against this today. They picketed Commissioner Anichan, who arrived at the village to pacify them, and resorted to a road blockade. The agitators were then arrested.

Traffic on the Puducherry-Villupuram highway was disrupted for about 30 minutes following the agitation.
