Andaman sanctions relief to rain affected families

Port Blair, May 25 (UNI) Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Governor Bhopinder Singh today sanctioned relief of Rs 30,01,400 to 1071 families affected following heavy rains in the island recently.

The islands experienced torrential rainfall with thunderstorms from May nine to 13 causing huge loss to life and property here and in all remote areas.

The worst affected areas were Mohanpura, Machi Line, DAG Colony, Beodnabad, Old Pahargoan, Prothapur, School Line and Brookshabad here, an official release from Raj Niwas stated.

A number of emergency relief camps have been set up for the people, the release said.

The electricity, APWD, PBMC, civil supplies, health and transport department were kept in readiness to face any ventualities, the administration claimed.

The Lt Governor has also hold a special meeting with civil, defence and airport authorities to review the situation.
