42 prisoners injured in Manipur jail clashes

Imphal, May 25 : At least forty two prisoners were injured when two sections of inmates at the Sajiwa Jail in Manipur's Imphal East District clashed with each other.

The injured prisoners were militants belonging to different outfits, including the People's United Front, Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak).

Official sources said on Sunday that the clash ensued over an inmate Nando's alleged objectionable behaviour with a woman visitor on Saturday.

Prisoners supporting Nando and opposing him later clashed over the issue leading to the injuries.

Top police officials, including Director General of Prisons A K Prashar took about three hours to control the clashes.

The injured are being treated at the J N District Hospital in Imphal, sources added.
