Tenth convocation of IIT-G held

Guwahati, May 24 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, (IIT-G) drew high praise for its efforts towards integrating science and engineering and for its contributions towards the North East region from Assam Governor Lt Gen (retd) Ajai Singh. The Governor, at the tenth convocation of the IIT-G, where 468 students were awarded degress yesterday, stressed on the need to expand technical education in the region.

Drawing reference to the Knowledge Commission's recommendation for bridging the gap between science and engineering, Lt Gen Singh highlighted IIT-G's leading role in integrating science and engineering at the B Tech level.

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics departments at the institute offer B Tech programmes in Engineering Physics, Chemical Science and Technology and Mathematics and Computing, respectively.

Dr M K Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and the chairman, Board of Governors of IIT-G, in his address, said the integration of emerging technological innovations in seeking solutions to the pressing problems faced by the disadvantaged section of the society should always remain a priority for IIT-G.

IIT-G Director Prof Gautam Barua, in his comprehensive report, presented the progress and achievement of the institute in the last fiscal.

The institute received some high-value cutting edge research projects in 2007-08.

On the placement scenario, he said placement during the period was very good with total of 80 companies from various sectors participaated in the recruitment of 442 students. (B Tech: 199, B Des: 19, M Tech: 165, MSc: 59).

The overall placement of the B Tech branches and BDes was very good with 100 per cent placement in Civil, Chemical and Biotechnology.

In the remaining branches too, the percentage of placement was above 95 per cent. For B Tech and BDes, number of job offers was 254 for 218 students.

The highest package offered to BTech students was Rs 30.12 lakhs per annum and average package was of Rs 6.74 lakhs per annum.

Prof Barua also announced that IIT-G has been entrusted with the task of mentoring the newly established IIT Patna in its formative years.
