Militant nexus allegation conspiracy of Congress: Mahanta

Guwahati, May 24 (UNI) The Congress' allegations of the present NC Hills Autonomous Council leaders' nexus with militants was a ploy to dissolve the Council, former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged here today.

Talking to reporters, Mr Mahanta said it was an old ploy of the Congress to conspire with ultras to dissolve the elected bodies whenever the party was ousted from power.

The Congress had done so in Assam in 1990 when the Asom Gana Parishad was in power and had got President's Rule imposed, he said.

He added that the Congress had repeated conspiracies to grab power in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Tripura.

The BJP-ASDC combine had routed the incumbent Congress in January to form the North Cachar Hills Autonomous District Council.

''It is the Congress which maintains links with militants and then uses them to levy such allegations on others,'' the former chief minister said.

He supported an enquiry by a central agency to expose the politician-militant nexus in the state.

The ASDC leaders had alleged that the Congress was abetting violence in the NC Hills with the help of insurgents, while the Congress, in its counter-allegations, claimed of evidence to expose ASDC leaders' links with the Dimasa rebels.
