4 killed in police firing on Gujjar agitation in Raj
Jaipur, May 23 (UNI) At least four people were killed and several others injured when police opened fire on Gujjar demonstrators blocking rail traffic in Rajasthan today, official sources said.
An irate mob of Gujjar demonstrators had blocked the railway tracks on busy Delhi-Mumbai route near Dumariya railway station in Bharatpur district this morningas part of their revived agitation to seek ST status for the community.
Sources said police opened fire when a bid to control the situation by use of teargas proved to be ineffective. Four people died and several sustained injuries in the firing, they added.
Divisional Commissioner (Bharatpur) Niranjan Arya said police opened fire to remove the demonstrators from the tracks.
He said the situation there was tense and the police and district administration officials were busy in controlling it.
