BRO's under-construction bridge collapses on NH-150

Kohima, May 22 (UNI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has dispatched a letter to Defence Minister A K Antony after a road bridge collapsed yesterday, which under construction by the Border Road Organisation (BRO) on National Highway-150 near Chakhabama in Kohima district.

Official sources here today said that Mr Rio, in his letter, apprised the Union Minister of the deplorable condition of the roads maintained by the BRO in the state and demanded an immediate enquiry into the use of sub-standard construction material by the BRO in maintaining roads and bridges in the state.

He also informed that Director General of BRO Lt Gen A K Nanda and Chief Engineer of BRO Brig S M Pandey, Project Sewak, to whom he wrote a letter on April 24 last, has sent him no response indicate any corrective action.

He asked for immediate enquiry into the matter and strict action against the erring officials.

Incidentally, Mr Rio, after assuming office, in a meeting with the senior bureaucrats, stressed on the quality control of the contractors in all constructions, especially in building roads and bridges, which were collapsing within few years after construction due to sub-standard materials.
