AITC, CPI(M) tangled in post-poll violence

Nandigram, May 22 (UNI) Fresh clashes broke out between AITC and CPI(M) supporters in Nandigram today after the former claimed a sweeping victory in the panchayat polls here yesterday.

Trouble erupted in Sonachura and Satengabari midnight last night and continued early this morning, with more than 12 houses being vandalised and at least five persons sustaining severe head injuries.

The injured have been admitted to Nandigram primary health centre.

SP S S Panda said he has sent his forces to the spot and he himself was also on his way to Sonachura.

Meanwhile, CRPF and RAF personnel were also patrolling the area amidst tension and apprehension of further trouble.

Trinamool leader and MLA Sisir Adhikary said this was CPI(M)'s reaction to their loss and attempts to terrorise the people of the region.

Mr Adhikary, who had apprised District Magistrate Anup Agarwal and Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty of the situation, also said if the situation further deteriorates, AITC supremo Mamata Banerjee may be beckoned.
