Works of 27 Tamil scholars nationalised

Chennai, May 21 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today announced the nationalisation of the works of 27 Tamil scholars and granted a solatium of Rs 1.65 crore to their legal heirs.

As announced in the State budget, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi ordered nationalisation of the works of Tamil scholars, including Poet Periyasami Thooran, Prof K Vellai Varananar, Pandithar Ka.

Ayothidasar, Abraham Pandithar, Paavalar Sethupillai, Raghava Iyengar, Udumalai Narayana Kavi, Avvai T K Shanmugham, Su.Samuthiram, Kovai Ilancheran and Prof Subbureddiar.

The solatium would be given to the legal heirs, depending on the number of books written by them, their social impact and literary value, an official release here said.

The State Government had so far nationalised the books of 67 Tamil scholars. Of this, works of 59 scholars were nationalised by the DMK Government and their legal heirs were paid a solatium of Rs 3.09 crore.
