Punjab Cong sets up cell to check violence against workers
Amritsar, May 18 (UNI) The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has constituted a five-member vigilance-cum-complaint cell to redress the complaints of the people of the Amritsar South Assembly constituency where a bypoll is scheduled for May 22.
According to PPCC chief spokesman Bir Devinder Singh the cell was constituted following sporadic incidents of violence by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers in the constituency.
The incidents were reported in the central election office of Congress candidate Navdeep Singh Goldy. Victims of the violence were directly approaching PPCC chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal for help.
Mr Bir Devinder said any party worker or voter being harassed by the police or by the Akalis would directly contact the cell in the central election office here. The members of the cell would ensure immediate appropriate action in the matter.
The cell consists of Mr R R Bhardwaj, Rakesh Ahir, Mr R P Atri, Mrs Mukesh Dhariwal and Mrs Veena Sobti.
