Two Sri Lankans held for smuggling gold biscuits
Chennai, May 16 (UNI) Airport Customs officials have arrested two persons from Sri Lanka, attempting to smuggle gold biscuits worth Rs 8.3 lakh, at the Anna International terminal here last night.
Officials said Ismail Araif (30) and Nijamuddin (27) hailing from Ramanathapuram district, were held when they tried to come out through the green channel.
When the official throughly checked them, it was found that they had inserted three gold biscuits, each in their anus. During the interrogation, they confessed that they had committed the crime for monetary benefits.
Later, the gold biscuits were seized with the help of a medical team and both were handed over to the airport police for further investigation.
Meanwhile, a Colombo bound Sri Lankan passenger was arrested for trying to smuggle 235 star turtles valued at Rs 3.5 lakh in the international market.
The seized turtles were handed over to the wildlife department officials and the accused was detained for further investigation.
