Cabinet nod to Science and Engineering Research Board

New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) The Government today decided to set up a Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) to speed up basic research programmes and delivery of funds to researchers.

It will be a high-level empowered Board, headed by the Science and Technology Secretary, with necessary administrative and financial autonomy.

''On policy matters, it will receive necessary guidance from an Oversight Committee chaired by a scientist of international repute,'' Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that gave the approval.

The need for SERB was felt because of the fast changing contours of advanced basic scientific research.
