Rain-hit Andaman demand immediate relief

Port Blair, May 14 (UNI) Andaman and Nicobar Islands' lone MP Manoranjan Bhakta today demanded immediate relief for the islands, which suffered huge losses due to heavy rain since the last week.

Andaman Congress unit Chief Spokesperson K Ganeshan today told UNI that Mr Bhakta had, in a telephonic discussion with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, discussed various issues related to the situation in the islands due to heavy rain since the past week.

The Member of Parliament also reportedly discussed with Joint Secretary, New Delhi, for the assessment of loss and damages due to heavy rainfall in Port Blair, South, Middle and North Andamans for immediate relief.

''We are expecting some relief from the Centre,'' the Spokesperson added.

Heavy rainfall since last week had lashed these remote Islands damaging government and private property.

According to the Met department, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have received more than 800 mm rainfall since last week and 1300 mm since January 1 this year.
