Online trading of gender kits under watch

Hoshiarpur, May 12 (UNI) The online trading of sex determination kits, which are being imported from the US and Canada, is under strict vigil of Punjab police, official sources today said.

On the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding steps to stop the circulation sale or utilisation of sex determination kits, the Punjab police has formed a joint-committee for keeping track of individuals and agencies indulging in internet trading for importing gender test kits in the state.

The two-member committee, constituted by Additional Director General of Police (Crime), will also suggest steps needed to be taken to tackle the issue of female foeticide.

According to the official sources here today, on internet searching by the joint committee, three major gender test kits supplying agencies have already been identified in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

The ADGP had informed the SSPs of the three district in this regard. Besides he had also informed the SSPs of other districts in the state, the sources said.

The details about the individual or any agency to whom the three agencies had supplied the kits would be given to police station concerned, the sources said, adding that after ascertaining the antecedents of the individual or agency that place the order for import of the kits, the police will intimate the civil surgeon of the respective district who is the district appropriate authority under the PC and PNDT Act.
