Wheat procurement crosses 18 million tonnes mark this season
New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) The procurement of wheat has crossed 18.01 million tonne mark this season as against the 9.06 million tonnes procured by government agencies by this time last year.
As per information collected by the Department of Food and Public Distribution, government agencies had procured 18.01 million tonnes wheat as on May 8, 2008 which is 92 per cent of the total arrivals of 19.6 million tonnes.
The procurement made so far is nearly double of the procurement made by Government agencies by this time last year (9.06 million tonnes) and 62 per cent more than the total procurement of wheat in 2007-08 (11.13 million tonnes).
Punjab has contributed 9.39 Million tonnes, Haryana 5.04 million tonnes, Uttar Pradesh 1.34 million tonnes, Madhya Pradesh 1.26 million tonnes, Rajasthan 0.70 million tonnes and Gujarat 0.17 million tonne.
Other states contributing to the pool include: Bihar, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and Delhi, an official release said here today.
