SB police seize explosives meant for LTTE
Rameswaram , May 8 (UNI) In a major explosives haul, Tamil Nadu Special Branch (SB) police tonight seized a large quantity of explosives and chemicals which were to be smuggled to Sri Lanka for LTTE at Akkalmadam seashore and arrested one person in this connection, here.
A senior police official of SB told UNI here that during a routine surveillance, a police team led by sub-inspector of police Manivannan found a person moving suspiciously near a fishing trawler on the seashore.
The team swung into action and checked the trawler.
The police team found 83,500 detonators, 24 bags of red phosphorous, toxic liquid chemicals packed in 34 tins, nine kg of Ammonium Chlorate and 200 batteries concealed in the trawler.
The police arrested the man,identified as Nagarajan, the owner of the fishing trawler. Preliminary interrogations of the arrested person revealed that the explosive materials were meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka for the LTTE.
He was waiting on the seashore to send the consignment to Lanka through a clandestine boat.
Further investigation and a search was on to arrest two Sri Lankans, he added.
