Gold sales poised to cross 55 tonnes during Akshaya Tritiya

Chennai, May 7 (UNI) Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious day on which purchase of precious metals is believed to bring lasting prosperity, might see a higher sales this year, according to trade body and retailers here today.

The festival of Akshaya Tritiya was popularised by the industry in the last few years.

''Though the gold prices were fluctuating this year, sales during this Akshaya Tritiya is expected to cross 55 tonnes,'' Managing Director, World Gold Council (Indian Subcontinent), Ajay Mithra said.

The festival was gaining popularity owing to media campaigns, he added.

''More people would be coming today evening, which is expected to increase further tomorrow,'' he added.

Interestingly, people were no longer confining themselves to jewellery shops in the crowded commercial areas in the cities. An increasing number of shoppers were also opting to buy gold coins and bars from nationalised and private banks, which offered 24 carat gold.

Gold coins weighing 2.5 grams, five grams, ten grams, 20 grams and 50 grams were being sold across bank counters. Purchasing them is hassle-free and one need not jostle in a crowd before laying hands on the glittering metal.
