Singda dam repair work affects water supply in Manipur

Imphal, May 6 (UNI) The entire state of Manipur has been facing acute shortage of water due to the failure of the main water supply project at Singda in Imphal.

Official sources said if the state did not receive any rainfall within the next few days, the dam would be without a single drop of water.

Meanwhile, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Minister T N Haokip visited the Singda dam site and met village chiefs to discuss about the maintenance of the dam.

People of Imphal city, who depend entirely on water supply by the PHED, were most affected by the water shortage.

The residents of Imphal were now dependent on water supplied by private tankers.

However, the operators of the tankers said they could supply water to about five-ten houses in a day whereas the demand was in thousands, hence they were unable to meet the demand.

Most of the ponds were also dry and people were compelled to use water from the highly polluted Nambul and Imphal rivers as there is no other source.

Official sources said the Singda Multipurpose Project was under repair and hence could not supply water.

The Khuga Multipurpose Project, Thoubal Multipurpose Project and Dolaithabi Barrage are some of the projects presently under construction by the government to provide water to the people.
