Nirmala Deshpande's ashes immersed in Sangam
{image-nirmala1]_06052008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Allahabad, May 6: Noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande's ashes were immersed in Sangam today.
Allahabad Mayor Chowdhary Jitendra Nath Singh received the ashes, which were brought to the city by Prayagraj Express train this morning. The ashes of the Gandhian, who was also national President of All India Harijan Sewak Sangh, were kept in Ishwar Sharan Ashram. Many people, including children, paid homage to the Padma Vibushan Nirmala Deshpande there.
Later, a procession marched to Quila Ghat at Sangam, where the ashes were immersed in the midstream of the holy river.
His son Vibhuti Kumar Mishra said ashes would be immersed in stages in river Ganga at other cities also. Hence, the procession will march to perform the ritual at its next destination in Varanasi tomorrow.
Several noted personalities, including R K Srivastava, Shankar Singh, Umashankar Pandey and Prem Prakash Shukla, were present in the immersion ceremony.
