Traders close shops protesting against price rise

Chennai, May 5 (UNI) Traders across Tamil Nadu closed their shutters in protest against rising prices of essential commodities on the occasion of 'Vanigar Dinam'(Traders' Day).

The shutter-down call by the Vanigar Peravai evoked a good response, since most of the hotels, shops and small business establishments had participated in the agitation.

A meeting was also organised by Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangakalin Peravai (TNVSP) at Island grounds in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, TNVSP president Vellaiyan accused the Centre of following wrong economic policies, which have ''resulted in the rise of prices of essential commodoties.'' ''By passing various resolutions at the conference, we would highlight current crisis to all political party leaders and urge them to take necessary steps, since a situation would soon come, wherein India may have to bow down before foreign countries,'', he added.

The important resolutions passed, included, checking artificial price hike and protecting small trading activities.
