Pondy to implant elephants with microchips

Puducherry, May 5 (UNI) A microchip was today implanted on the left ear of an elephant belonging to the Manakkula Vinayagar Temple here to trace its position in case of missing.

Dr Manoharan, a veterinary doctor of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in presence of Puducherry Forest Conservator Devarajan, today implanted the chip on 17-year-old elephant Lakshmi's left ear.

Dr Manoharan later told newspersons that it was decided to fix the microchip on all temple and domestic pachyderm and a number would be given to each animal.

In case the elephant lost its way, it could be traced on the Forest Department's computer with the help of the scanner on the microchip.

Another elephant at the Thirunallar Temple in Karaikal Region would be implanted with the microchip tomorrow, he added.
