16-yr-old mother abandons baby after giving it birth in toilet

Aizawl, May 4 (UNI) A teenage school student abandoned her newborn baby after delivering it in a toilet of a hospital at Durtlang, near here.

The 16-year-old mother from Durtlang had left her baby in the toilet of Presbyterian Hospital a few days ago, hospital sources said. However, they were unable to trace her, they added.

Initially, the nurses were not sure of who the mother of the baby was but later they remembered that she had came earlier, complaining of a stomach ache for which they had given her an analgesic.

''Later, she went into the toilet and must have given birth to the baby prematurely and abandoned it there,'' the nurses said.

Despite being eight months pregnant, she had somehow concealed the bump from the school and hostel authorities and even her companions and went to the hospital's emergency ward to get herself checked for pain.

Sources said nurses on duty at the emergency room had heard cries of the baby from the toilet and found the baby wrapped in wet cloth.
