PM owes an explanation on Subba: Samajwadi Party

Guwahati, May 3: The Samajwadi Party today demanded an explanation from the PMO regarding controversial Assam MP Mani Kumar Subba's citizenship issue. ''Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should clarify whether the CBI is correct or the Congress MP since the CBI is under the Personnel Department and at present under the PMO,'' party General Secretary Amar Singh told a press conference here.

The CBI had said Mr Subba was a Nepalese citizen and claimed that he had become a member of the Lok Sabha on forged documents. The matter is before the Supreme Court which has given six weeks to Mr Subba to reply. ''Dr Singh represents Assam. Mr Subba is not only from his adopted state but also from his own party. The CBI is directly under him and he should now clarify what is the truth,'' Mr Singh said.

Cornered by the CBI and apex court, the controversial Congress MP remained defiant even as his party was slowly distancing itself from him.
