Newly-wed commits suicide; husband, mother-in-law held

Jalandhar, May 3 (UNI) Police have arrested the husband and mother-in-law of a newly - married woman, who committed suicide at her Pacca Bagh residence here.

Police today said the deceased identified as Anju (25) committed suicide by self-immolating at her in-laws house yesterday, when no other member of the family was at home.

They said neighbours rushed her to the civil hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

At the time of the incident, her husband Chetan Tandon, a cycle mechanic, was at work while her mother-in-law Kiran Rani was in market.

The victim's father Ajmer Singh in a statement to the police said Anju was married to Chetan some 11 months ago and since they had been pressuring her to bring more dowry. She took the extreme step when she was unable to bear the physical and mental torture at the hands of her in-laws, he alleged.

The police registered a case under Section 304-B of the IPC against Anju's husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law Kanchal.

Efforts were on to nab the absconding sister-in-law of the deceased, the police added.
