Five arrested for possessing ''yellow cake'' in Meghalaya
Shillong, May 3 (UNI) Five people were arrested in Meghalaya, while attempting to sell a kilogram of ''yellow cake'' Uranium- to a police decoy in Meghalaya.
Police today said the packet had the tag of the Atomic Energy Department (AED) and Government of India, which also read ''Not meant for sale. Explosive No. 2004/99E and Uranium Volta 325(6).'' Acting on a tip off, the police arrested gang kingpin Arias Paduh along with Thrang Jana, Ligthterstone Ranee, Marshal Mawlong and Nisha Shabong from Shillong suburb Golflink on Thursday night.
DSP (Crime) Vivek Syiem said police managed to trap and then arrest the five ''smugglers'' while they were trying to make a deal on refined uranium worth Rs 26 lakh.
He said all five have been remanded in seven days police custody.
He said the sealed packet will be send to the forensic laboratory in Guwahati to confirm whether the consignment was indeed uranium ore.
In the past uranium theft were reported from Meghalaya, but AMD officials had denied that the substance was genuine.
Police have registered a case.
