London, May 2 : Pete Doherty will soon be a free bird, for he's being released on May 6 - after serving just 29 days of his 14-week jail term.

And, the release is going through despite reports that he took heroin while in prison.

Originally scheduled to complete 98 days behind bars, the junkie rocker's sentence has been halved and a further 18 days deducted as part of a scheme introduced last summer to ease jail overcrowding.

In addition, he will also get another two days off because of time in police custody.

"Nobody should ever come out that early," The Sun quoted Ex-Home Office minister Annwiddecombe, as saying.

The 29-year-old rocker was sent behind the bars after he defied orders to take drug tests during a suspended sentence for smack possession.

While his premature release sparked fury, Doherty was planning a big after-release splurge.

"He's planning to go straight to play a gig - and then get smashed. He wants no business appointments for three days - so he can really go for it," revealed a pal.
