BJP's Harshvardhan,Vijay Goel take out marches,traders down shutters

New Delhi, May 2 (UNI) Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party today took out marches across Delhi and traders downed shutters in many markets as the BJP call for nationwide strike against the sharp price rise of essential commodities evoked a mix response here.

The BJP activists in many areas like Karol Bagh, Mayur Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Shahdara, Narela, New Delhi, South Delhi, West Delhi, Punjabi Bagh, Najafgarh and Mehrauli carried out foot marches under the leadership of senior party leaders like Delhi BJP Chief Harshvardhan and party General Secretary Vijay Goel.

In many areas, traders closed their shops in support of the BJP call for strike.

Dr Harshvardhan, describing the strike as a success in Delhi, claimed that all the prominent markets of the state remained completely closed.

According to Karol Bagh District President Ravinder Gupta, markets like Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar, Rajender Nagar, Pahar Ganj, Shankar Market and Ajmal Khan Road market remained completely closed.

''The impact of the strike called by the BJP in protest against back breaking price spiral was widely seen in entire Delhi.

People participated voluntarily in the strike and kept their establishments closed. There was unprecedented zeal among the traders and people of Delhi,'' the Delhi BJP chief said.

Addressing the protestors in Karol Bagh and Mayur Vihar districts, Dr Harshvardhan said, ''Even as the Central government claims about controlling price spiral, the price is increasing.

Today, inflation increased to 7.57 per cent which is a record and the highest inflation during UPA rule.'' ''Inspite of claiming a record foodgrain production the government could not bring down the price spiral even by one per cent. By manipulating the datas inflation is being shown less.

Actual inflation is more than 15 per cent,'' the Delhi BJP chief said.

In Chandni Chowk Mr Goel took out a foot march and called upon the traders to make the strike successful.
