TN Corpn bans plastic below 20 micron

Tiruchirapalli, May 1 (UNI) The Tiruchirapalli Corporation has decided to ban the production and use of plastic bags and other plastic products below 20 microns in thickness.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at an urgent meeting of the corporation here yesterday.

The resolution said a similar ban had been enforced by the Coimbatore Corporation and the Udhagamandalam and Kodaikanal Municipalities.

Mayor Sarubala R Tondaiman, who chaired the meeting, said though the resolution referred to plastic of all thickness, the ban would be applicable only to plastic materials below 20 microns in thickness and cover plastic bags, cups,tumblers and plastic-coated plates.

The Corporation has decided to levy a fine on consumers using plastic products, retail and wholesale traders and manufacturers of plastics. Violation of the ban would attract penalty.
