May day observed in UP's industrial city

Kanpur, May 1 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh's industrial city Kanpur today observed May Day, where closure of mills emerged as the major concern.

To mark the day, seminars, gate meetings and demonstrations were held at different industrial units across the city, sources said.

Speakers expressing concern over closure of most of the major inudstrial units said ''Kanpur was known as Manchester of India when there were over one dozen textile units, leather, iron and steel mills working...day-by-day the industrial picture of the city is deteriorating.'' Even after three decades none of the closed mills was reopen, they added.

At a gate meeting held at Kanpur textile mills, labour leaders urged the union government to reopen at least one or two textile mills of the city, as Kanpur was famous for textile after Mumbai.

Labour organisations of various political parties, including Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and All India Trade Union Congress (AINTUC), also organised separate meetings in different parts of the city on the occasion.
