American Bar Association to honour Pakistani lawyers, judges

Washington, May 1 : The American Bar Association (ABA) has decided to give its annual Rule of Law Award to those lawyers and judges who have demonstrated courage in upholding the rule of law in Pakistan.

The ABA, representing thousands of American lawyers, said that it wanted to recognise the vivid bravery of Pakistani lawyers who faced down baton-wielding police over threats to their country's Constitution, and judges who were fired or had quit their posts.

The award will be formally given in August at the ABA Rule of Law luncheon in New York.

According to the Daily Times, representatives from Pakistan's legal and judicial community will be invited to accept the award on behalf of incarcerated Pakistani lawyers and judges.
