24 construction workers feared killed in bridge collapse
Perambalur, Tamil Nadu, May 1 (UNI) As many as 24 construction workers were feared killed when an under-construction bridge collapsed on the Vellar River between Perambalur and Thozuthur this afternoon.
Preliminary information reaching here said as many 30 workers were engaged in the brige construction work. The mishap occurred when they were removing a huge boulder which collapsed on them.
On information, Police and Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and rescued six workers from the debris. They were rushed to the neighbouring hospitals.
Efforts were on to remove the bodies of the 24 workers by clearing the debris. Top officials from neighbouring Cuddalore and Perambalur Districts have rushed to the spot.
The project comes under the Chennai-Tiruchirarpalli National Highway Four-Laning Project.
